Roof Box Buying Guide Egypt

How to choose the right roof box, roof rack, crossbars and bike carrier for your car.

A roof box is one of the easiest ways to add extra luggage space to your car without filling the cabin with bags, strollers, sports gear or travel items.

At Roof Box Egypt, we help drivers choose suitable roof boxes, roof racks, roof bars, crossbars and bike carriers in Egypt for SUVs, crossovers, 7-seater family cars and everyday vehicles.

Whether you are travelling to Sahel, Sokhna, Sinai, the airport or a long family road trip, the right roof storage setup can make the journey more comfortable, safer and cleaner inside the car.

Start with how you travel

Not every roof box is right for every customer. Before choosing by price or liters, think about what you actually carry.

Family travel and Sahel/Sokhna/Gouna weekends

Choose a medium-large or large roof box with good length and width. This is usually the best choice for family bags, beach gear, kids' items and soft luggage.

7-seater SUVs

Cars like 7-seater SUVs often have limited boot space when all seats are used. A larger roof box can help free the cabin and make long trips more comfortable.

Airport luggage

Roof boxes are ideal for soft luggage, duffel bags, backpacks, and medium-sized travel bags. If you are carrying hard-shell airplane suitcases, the internal height of the roof box is one of the most important factors to check. The taller the roof box, the more likely it is to fit hard-shell suitcases comfortably, because roof boxes are curved inside and liter capacity alone does not always reflect usable luggage space.

Cycling and sports

If you want to carry bikes together with a roof box, you should choose the box and crossbars carefully. Narrower or medium-width boxes can leave more space on the roof bars for a bike carrier.

Do not choose only by liters

Many customers compare roof boxes only by capacity: 470L, 520L, 630L or 680L. Liters are useful, but they do not tell the full story.

In real life, the usefulness of a roof box depends on:

Some brands may advertise a very generous volume, while others list a more conservative capacity. This does not always mean one box is automatically bigger or smaller. The shape of the roof box can make a big difference.

A roof box may technically have a high liter capacity, but if the front section is very curved or low, the first 20–30 cm may be difficult to use for normal luggage. That space may only be suitable for soft items such as jackets, coats, towels, small bags, or water bottles.

That is why we always recommend looking beyond the liter number. For airport luggage, family bags, and hard-shell suitcases, the usable internal height and shape are often more important than the total capacity. A well-shaped 470L roof box can sometimes be more practical than a larger box with a very curved design.

A lower, sleeker roof box may look better and create less wind resistance, but a higher box may be easier for bulky luggage. For many families, width and height are more important than the claimed liter number. This is also why soft bags usually work better than large hard-shell suitcases inside roof boxes.

Roof Box Egypt focuses on helping customers choose the right product for how they actually travel, not just the biggest number printed in a catalogue.

You need the right roof bars first

A roof box cannot be fitted safely without suitable roof bars or crossbars.

Roof bars depend on your car roof type:

Raised roof rails

These are rails with a visible gap between the rail and the car roof. They are usually easier to fit with universal or semi-universal roof bar systems.

Flush or integrated roof rails

These sit close to the roof with no open gap. They often need more specific fitting kits depending on the vehicle model.

Fixed points

Some cars have hidden or visible fixing points under covers. These usually require a vehicle-specific kit.

Bare roof

Some vehicles have no rails or visible fixing points. These require special fitting solutions and must be checked carefully.

At Roof Box Egypt, we recommend sending your car model, year and roof photo before buying roof bars. This helps avoid the wrong fitment and makes the setup cleaner and safer.

Aluminium roof bars or steel roof bars?

Aluminium aerodynamic bars

These are usually the better choice for customers who care about design, lower wind noise and a cleaner look. They are also better for accessories that use T-track fitting systems.

Best for:

Steel bars

Steel bars are usually more affordable and practical. They are a good option for customers who want strong function at a lower price.

Best for:

Fitting systems: Quick Fix, U-bolt and T-track

Quick Fix

A faster and easier fitting system. Good for customers who may remove and reinstall the roof box more often.

Standard U-bolt

Simple, strong and usually more affordable. It may take slightly longer to install, but for many customers this is not a problem.

T-track adapter

A clean fitting option for compatible aluminium bars. It can help with positioning the roof box more neatly, especially if you also want to carry bike carriers.

FAQ

Do roof boxes fit all cars?

No. Roof boxes need suitable roof bars, and roof bars depend on your car roof type.

Can I install a roof box without roof bars?

No. A roof box needs compatible roof bars or crossbars.

Roof bars are the foundation of any load carrying system — everything else is fixed to them. Even cars with front to back roof rails will need a set of cross bars. It makes sense to buy a good quality system, mainly for safety reasons, but also to avoid any damage to your vehicle.

Are aluminium bars better than steel bars?

Aluminium bars usually look better and are more aerodynamic. Steel bars are usually more affordable and practical.

Are aluminium bars worth the extra money?

Yes, really because they allow you to carry more, and they'll be much quieter than square-edged steel bars. These are the main practical reasons for choosing aluminium bars:

(1) Usefulness. You can use the full length of the bars for fixing your accessories, which may allow you to carry more on the roof, and thereby get better value from the whole system. Whatever you're carrying on the roof bars is fixed to the aluminium bars via the slots that run full length along the tops of the bars. A frequent problem with the cheaper steel bars is that the roof bar feet get in the way of the accessory fixings.

(2) Low Noise. The aluminium bars we sell are all very significantly quieter than steel roof bars. Roof bars generate a hum, sometimes a whistle, often around the 'middle C' frequency, which can become intrusive in certain situations, especially if the roof bars are exposed — it depends on the type of car, the type of roof bars, and the position of the roof bars on the roof. The volume tends to increase in line with speed. We don't want to exaggerate this issue — millions of steel roof racks have been sold over the years, and if the roof bars sometimes make an irritating noise, so also do the tyres, the engine, even the passengers! It's also important to note that roof rack whistle can usually be reduced to an acceptable level by moving the roof bars forwards or backwards, even by a centimetre, and it's much less of an issue if there's a roof box to change the airflow.

(3) Fuel consumption. Aluminium bars create less drag than steel roof bars and therefore have less of an effect on fuel consumption. This is important, especially if you are likely to use your roof bars frequently or to leave them in place for many weeks at a time.

Can I carry a roof box and bike carrier together?

Sometimes yes, depending on the box width, roof bar length, bike carrier type and car roof width.

Are roof boxes waterproof?

Quality roof boxes are designed to resist normal rain and road conditions, but packing sensitive items in protective bags is still recommended.

What is better, Quick Fix or U-bolt?

Quick Fix is faster and easier. U-bolt is simple and practical. T-track fitting can be cleaner on compatible aluminium bars.
